Odin
Worship of Odin may date to Proto-Germanic paganism. The Roman historian Tacitus may refer to Odin when he talks of Mercury. The reason is that, like Mercury, Odin was regarded as Psychopompos, “the leader of souls.”
As Odin is closely connected with a horse and spear, and transformation/shape shifting into animal shapes, an alternative theory of origin contends that Odin, or at least some of his key characteristics, may have arisen just prior to the sixth century as a nightmarish horse god (Echwaz), later signified by the eight-legged Sleipnir.
Some support for Odin as a latecomer to the Scandinavian Norse pantheon can be found in the Sagas where, for example, at one time he is thrown out of Asgard by the other gods — a seemingly unlikely tale for a well-established “all father.” Scholars who have linked Odin with the “Death God” template include E. A. Ebbinghaus, Jan de Vries and Thor Templin. The later two also link Loki and Odin as being one-and-the-same until the early Norse Period[citation needed].He is also believed to have a mistical grey beard.
Music:
Manowar
Gods of War is an album by Manowar released in 2007. It’s the first of a series of concept albums dedicated to different war gods from various mythologies. Gods of War is centered around Odin, King of Gods and primary god of war in the Norse Mythology. All the text on the booklet was written in the Runic alphabet. The booklet is available for download in the official Manowar site. Cover art is painted by Ken Kelly.
Music of the album features symphonic metal influence, such as use of keyboard, choir and symphonic orchestra. Its close relationship with the four-opera cycle of Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner is intended by wagnerian DeMaio, as shown by the booklet and recent interviews with Michael Custodis.
Manowar Sleipnir Lyrics
He is descended from giants.
His father Loki, God of fire, is the sworn blood
brother to Odin himself.
He rides across land, sea, and air from the land of
the living, to the land of the dead.
This eight legged steed crosses eight points of the
compass, from eight directions into eight
dimensions.
He is the bringer of the valiant dead from the
battlefield to Valhalla!
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting for me
He was born of giants
His icy coat is grey
At night he rides into the world of death
The living by day
One day on his back I shall ride
From the battlefield into the sky
Borne by Valkyries we Valiant Dead
Into the Hall of Heroes shall be led
Ride down from Asgard
To the battlefield
Bringer of the Valiant Dead
Who died but never yeilded
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting for me
Faster than the fastest horse alive
The living son of fire rides
From the halls of Asgard across the sky
To the world of Gods and Men
Eight legs and magic runes
Carved upon his teeth
Thunder and lightning
Sound beneath his feet
On his back the war God Odin rides
Sword and magic spear held high
Ride down from Asgard
To the battlefield
Bringer of the Valiant Dead
Who died but never yielded
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting for me
(Instrumental Solo)
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting for me
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting for me
Carry we who die in battle
Over land and sea
Across the rainbow bridge
To Valhalla
Odin’s waiting for me
